In recognition of National Work Zone Awareness Week, April 9-13, 2018 we would like to remind Texas drivers that every day needs caution when driving through work zones. As the state’s population continues to rise, which means more than 2,500 active TxDOT work zones can be active at any given time. Reported in 2017 were 27,148 work zone crashes in Texas, resulting in 199 fatalities and another 813 serious injuries. Wow what astonishing numbers! The leading causes of work zone crashes statewide – speeding and driver inattention – these tragic deaths and injuries are completely preventable. While many TxDOT workers are injured or killed in work zones, it’s motorists that make up 82 percent of work zone fatalities.
