National Work Zone Awareness Week

Each year, the ATSSA Foundation promotes work zone safety during National Work Zone Awareness Week. This event honors those who have lost their lives while on duty and aims to encourage safe behaviors and practices to prevent tragedies in work zones. The theme for this year’s event, taking place from April 20th to 24th, is “Safe Actions Save Lives.”

Safe Actions Save Lives

Work zones across the United States are essential to ensuring the safety of drivers and workers alike. This week in April is a call to action to raise awareness among drivers about the importance of being considerate of workers in these areas. Each year, between 100 and 1,000 road and construction maintenance workers and drivers lose their lives in work zone incidents. Many of these tragic deaths could have been avoided if drivers had taken extra precautions in these marked zones.

Why Awareness Matters

Road work is a dangerous business. It isn’t just the workers who are at risk; statistics show that drivers and passengers make up the vast majority of work zone fatalities.

Metric Impact
Primary Cause Speeding and Distracted Driving
Common Incident Rear-end collisions are the most frequent work zone crashes

5 Ways to Be a Work Zone Hero

You don’t need a cape to save lives—just a little bit of patience and focus. Follow these “Orange Rules” to keep everyone safe:

  • Expect the Unexpected: Work zones can change daily. Normal speed limits may be reduced, traffic lanes may change, and people may be working near the travel lane.
  • Keep Your Distance: Rear-end crashes are the #1 type of accident in work zones. Leave extra space between you and the car in front of you.
  • Phone Down, Eyes Up: At 55 mph, if you look at your phone for five seconds, you’ve driven the length of a football field blind. In a work zone, that’s a recipe for disaster.
  • Obey the Signs: Those diamond-shaped signs aren’t suggestions. They are there to give you the specific information you need to navigate the zone safely.
  • Slow Down: Fines for speeding in a work zone are often doubled. It’s better to arrive five minutes late than to never arrive at all

Why Material Quality Matters

At Transline Industries, we know that a work zone is only as safe as its visibility. It’s not just about putting a line on the road; it’s about ensuring that line stays bright, reflective, and clear under the worst conditions. High-quality materials aren’t just a preference—they are a proven safety intervention.

  • Reflectivity is a Lifeline: Most work zone accidents occur due to poor visibility or driver confusion. Our high-performance thermoplastics and reflective glass beads ensure that lanes are visible even in heavy rain or the pitch-black of a night shift.
  • Durability Equals Predictability: Faded markings lead to “ghost lanes” and driver indecision. We provide durable, heavy-duty paints and tapes that withstand thousands of tire passes, keeping traffic patterns predictable and workers protected.
  • The Power of Orange: Studies have shown that high-contrast, specialized orange work zone markings can reduce lane-departure crashes by up to 74%. We take pride in supplying the high-visibility solutions that command driver attention.
