Most people think that marked crosswalks offer a safe place to cross the street. However, studies have shown that crosswalk paint alone offers no additional safety benefit to pedestrians, and on high-volume, multilane roads, it can even increase the risk of a crash. (source)

Rectangular rapid-flashing beacons (RRFBs) can make a huge difference in enhancing driver awareness and compliance, boosting yield rates to as high as 96% and reducing crashes involving pedestrians by up to 47%, according to the FHWA (source).

Typically installed at midblock crossings, roundabouts, and unsignalized intersections, RRFBs use high-intensity LEDs that flash rapidly and erratically to catch drivers’ attention and let them know that a pedestrian is waiting to cross the street. They are MUTCD compliant, AC- or solar-powered, and easy to install.
